Water Loss: From Reactive Fixes to Proactive Strategy

Non-revenue water (NRW) continues to be one of the biggest challenges utilities face globally. Traditionally, the approach has been reactive, focusing on 1) find leaks, 2) fix leaks, and repeat.
But that model is no longer sustainable.
A proactive strategy starts with visibility. District metering areas (DMAs), continuous monitoring, and acoustic sensors are giving utilities a clearer picture of where losses are occurring. But again, technology alone isn’t the answer.
The real shift is cultural and operational.
Utilities are beginning to prioritize risk-based asset management. This leads to understanding not just where leaks are, but where they are most likely to occur next. This means integrating historical data, pipe condition, soil type, and pressure trends into predictive models.
The result? Fewer emergency repairs, lower operational costs, and better service reliability.
Water loss isn’t just a technical issue, it’s a strategic one. And the utilities treating it that way are already seeing the difference.
